Final thoughts

I would like to end the my blogs on greed by saying a little prayer for all of us. No matter how much we are greed stricken , no matter how much the world has changed and how much the whole humanity has been infested with this pest ,there is always a cure and always a bright side. The world has a complete capability to change for the better . There  are still people who work for humanity, who does not know Angelina Jolie, there are still examples of pollution free countries like Bhutan , and there are still divine spirits who are  just working selflessly. So there is still hope.  Hope of betterment , hope for mutual happiness, long lasting relationships , platonic love ,friends without benefits  and above all have time for one another. This world bears popular figures like Bill Gates who give away most of their possessions to charity and humanitarians like Abdul Sattar Edhi who spend their whole lives helping the needy and the poor . Life comes once and one should make it worth living. What is the fun in living if if you are only living it for urself, but if people benefit from your life or when people gather happiness from your deeds what could be a better way to live. One has to choose, choose what to do in a situation where there is a choice between giving and getting, when you can choose between comfort or satisfaction, when you can decide between the truth and falsehood. All you have to do is choose , you can choose , I can choose.
I can choose my selflessness over my selfishness to accumulate and in the process just walk over a million hearts that I have broken, I can choose not to lie and face the consequences with courage over  repeated and habitual lying just for some benefits,  I can choose not to be the most powerful or most popular but be remembered by atleast hundreds of people just by my small acts of kindness and love, I can choose sensitivity over inhumanity, faith over fear ,humbleness over power and choose a life that might not be very successful or glitz and glamour but it would definitely be a life of peace , humility and softheartedness and definitely a life of dignity. If I can choose then you can choose too.
We have a recent example at our hands , a human being after being a world class champion and living a life of money and power all he wanted to do was to be remembered as a man of love and peace and equality. It's non other than Mohammad Ali, the greatest boxer of all times. He could have continued with power and fame but he let the whole world know of his desire to selflessness and his greed for love and guess what, that is what made him as a symbol of not only success but also a man of dignity.
I just hope that in this small life of just a few decades I can achieve a lot that can please my inner soul and since life only comes once we must strive to make the most of it.

The cure for greed

Overcoming greed is not an easy task . The bigger the problem  ,the harder the solution. And the stronger the addiction the more effort required to come out of it. Since it is an addiction and a habit then one has to tame one self not to get into the flow and try restraining as much as possible since it's not a compulsion. Even when things are favouring greed ,one must step back to allow ones spiritual growth. One has to fight deeper to get to the real solution. So many questions to ask oneself. How will the success effect me?, how reliable is this success?, are my relationships going to be affected by it ?, do I have better options ?, are my craving and desires rational?.
Facing the reality is harsh but it is the only solution to rid ones soul of this foul evil. Monetary success is just relative , and there is no such thing as enough. What is enough for one could just be the basic necessity for another. So facing the reality and knowing "enough" will never happen and that it does not exist can help one teach oneself that how much is needed and how much is shear greed .
Next help urself identify the problems like the basic cause of greed , competitiveness, fear, gluttony, the need to be successful.
Next a bold step has to be taken in that direction ,all negative influences have to be eliminated. Fake wanna be people who have nothing better to do but hoarding and then boasting have to be eliminated. Similarly negative thoughts  also have to eradicated. Instead indulge your energies in positives activities like painting , physical activities ,swimming for example, and meditation.
Another important aspect that's actually helps avoid greed is gratitude. Being thankful and grateful for all that one has makes one wants less and ask for less unnecessarily.
Strong faith in humanity, the divinity of God , and purity of hearts also helps reduce the extreme desire to greed. In the end it all depends on you and you alone.

If greed conquers the world

Can you imagine what will happen if greed will takes over the world just like technology has. What if the next tsunami is named "voracity" ,the next volcano to erupt exudes the burning lava of lust and the next tornado of the hunger of power and money is unstoppable. How different the world is from what is was a few decades ago when technology has not yet reached its prime. The effects of technology are profound. And thus the analogy of greed with technology is quite correct. The world was so different a few decades ago, simpler , easier and peaceful. As soon as the technology spurt took over, the green belts transformed into high rise buildings, the simple one to one conversations have converted to communication by gadgets , letters have changed to emails, emotions have changed to emojis, swords have been replaced by nuclear weapons  and everybody knows the effects of these in the world . The change is colossal and definitely not positive . The outcomes are as expected . Violence , crime, lies, fraud , distant relationships , unemotional empty bodies, fast paced selfish life  styles are all but the natural outcome of prevalence of technology. What happened  to the simple life style, the outdoor games, the love and feelings between humans , the selflessness, the relationships , the family systems ,the abundant nature and the peace and humanity?. All vanished in thin air within a few years . Exactly similar to this situation is the after effects of greed on humanity ,the same level of degeneration , the same ill effects and the same amount of self destruction . Only if people can realize the changes within them that  greed has been cultivating . No value for honesty , no time for love and no place for humanity. Indeed man is cruel on his soul. Greed has indeed conquered the world. Just like the wifi greed seems to be the only platform that humans connect on. By the secular standards If you are success greedy then you are oriented , if you are money greedy then ur logically right and just helping your survival instincts and if if you are power greedy then I guess you are ambitious. But the truth is miles and miles away from this scale of measuring a human. Have you ever witnessed the downtown life, or the life in many busy, high technology fast paced cities of the world like maybe Beijing and Tokyo. If so then you must have realized how the people in these places have a very fast paced robotic life . This is what technology ,the hunger and greed to just gain more and more  in life has made humans. We are enslaved by our own unlawful desires and the cage is huge ,it can take in as many slaves as possible. The shackles of fear and deception makes the escape more difficult.

The flip side of greed

I have written so much about greed ,so much but all dark and negative. But dear readers, there are always two sides to a story. And thus greed has a flip side too. There is  a positive and spiritual side of greed that comes into play only when ones lusts for truth and knowledge. The craving for real beneficial and fulfilling knowledge that actually enlightens a human being of this world and beyond. What could be better than having ones nose in books than in someone's business?.The greed to learn , learn about the amazing places in the world , learn about different cultures, their way of living, know about what goes around in the other corner of the world. So many part of the world need healing . So many war stricken areas need to be recovered to their original shape. So many species of insects, reptiles and animals to know about , such a vast sea life to wonder at. We also have an Enriching  history yet to be discovered, amazing facts of the world, the mysteries of the universe, the secrets of space, the thousand and thousands of skills to be learnt , the intricacy of human body, the complexity of mind, the uncountable languages ,various religions , the existence of God, the evolution of humans ,the emotions of people , the sensitivity of relationships and  ultimately use all this fruitful knowledge to discover and unveil the truths of life and the effects of love not only towards humans but also towards  animals . Utilize these truths to maintain and cherish relationships , maintain friendships and secure place in people's hearts. What a virtue such a greed would be ?. Unbelievably spiritual, incomprehensibly selfless and extremely beneficial. Such a voracity can change the world for the better . But the sad truth is that this type of greed is hard to find , a rare entity that has been overshadowed by the Devils cape of selfishness. It is sad but it is also the truth. How many of us have actually worked towards the virtuous greed ?. But almost all of us has at one point in life practiced the vicious greed. Why can we not jail our heinous greed and nurture the urge to help people, hand away money, clothes and food to the poor and needy . Gone are the days when people would stand in the sun to give water to the thirsty and food to the hungry. But let me point out to you some cultures still have traditions that are heart touching. I'm sure living in Canada has introduced us to various cultures and one such is the Khalsa parade in which people from all walks of life celebrate by distributing water and food . This is however a day's events. Another example is the Holy month of Ramadan ,wherein Muslims are so "pious deed greedy "that they go an extra mile to help anyone anywhere they can to accumulate as many good deeds in their basket as they can . Charities are given open heartedly, food is distributed  and  small deeds of kindness are very common . My only request would be if we could make such holy trademarks common in our everyday lives instead of limiting them to a day or a month. Such examples prove the existence of the cure of greed ,the only need is to bring this practice in our everyday life.

Side effects of greed

Now let us just briefly discuss how greed affects the world in general. Greed can be called as a spiritual imperfection that when let loose can actually produce profound affects on a vast scale . Voracity has brought about more harm to the connections of families and companions. Families are losing their homes in which they have lived in for quite a long time to the hunger for property distribution amongst siblings. Instead of preserving the family home as a sign of a consolidated family, it is not bizarre today to see vacant homes with "bank possessed" signs posted in the windows. This is really a presentation of voracity where the material things are more significant than individuals. The monetary discouragement has made guardians lose their employments, in this manner not able to pay their home loans. This wellspring of ravenousness genuinely exhibits that our general public, "treasures things more than individuals or connections."
There is flip side to it too . Just to avoid property and land division there is set of people especially in South Asian culture that endorses a cruel practice called polyandry where a family of men, usually three to five siblings, marry a single woman into their home in order to avoid the distribution of land and property amongst the generations thus preserving it. So a single woman acts as a wife to many grooms although she is legally married to only one. She has to serve all the men in the house and carry on all the duties including sex. This practice was very common in the past ,although less prevalent now ,in parts of  India ,Nepal and even China but it still exists. This form of greed , although lets the families stay put but is highly unacceptable and unhealthy .
A lot of greed stricken people have developed scams like debt relief, home modification, travel scams that portray on the surface as great deals like " making money overnight" and inviting friends and family but actually terminates the sole foundation of relationships once the scam is exposed. Both the parties are at fault ,the fraudulent and the victims. Both of them have tongues hanging out and dollar signs in the eyes resulting in daydreaming and ending in deception.
Fake or stolen tax identities is just another example of  heinous acts like greed. People all over the world are affected by this form of criminal greed which is also triggered by poverty. People living below the poverty line are easy preys of such sins. It is interesting to note that even a pure feeling like love has been diluted with greed . On the television program  CBS This Morning, a poll showed that when a younger woman is seen with an older man, she is considered to be 53% greedier and not necessarily in love with this older man. There have been examples in the past where people have given up their wealths and royal status for love and now we have individuals who fake love to get wealthy and in power. Politicians are driven by greed and 50  percent of the population believe that the greedier the person ,the more successful he is because greed has no soul or heart just an empty compartment that keeps filling and filling .

Lies and greed

Lies and greed go hand in hand. People lie because of fear, hate and greed and the lust for more makes one lie again and again making lies and greed run in a self sustainable cycle. So the fear of losing something or the greed to accumulate more and more makes an individual lie fearlessly. A lie is like a key in an envelops of initial hesitation, once the hesitation is given up you begin to use the key to open the doors to all kinds of imaginable demons without any shame or boundaries. Once that phenomenon comes into effect, greed that has been behind the curtain comes into action and further aggravates the situation to become endless. In no time we are lying every few minutes during the day. A study shows habitual liars will atleast lie 10 times a day. They are the "compulsive liars ".   Most of the times the person does not even realize the whirlpool he's in. He deceives himself and without his conscious knowledge, he is lying like anything resulting in a personality disorder. Thus this trait is also linked to psychopathology of mind.He has a lie for every statement, practically every statement where he has to protect himself or where it better suits him to lie and also where it is necessary to come out clean. And the worst part is that habitual liars tend to believe themselves. It is not a part of an act, it is their personality, and this is what they have become. It takes courage ,stamina and integrity to face the practical world honestly and of course resistance is inevitable. Lying is the easy way out of a situation and represents a cowardly side of ones personality. Confessing and apologizing are not "ego friendly". Have you ever thought that we lie when we do not want to explain ourselves, we lie to get something we would not get otherwise, we also lie to prove ourselves right and we lie in every profitable situation.
Lying is an innate quality. Behavioral researcher Wendy Gamble, associate professor at the University of Arizona's School of Family and Consumer Sciences, has considered lying among school kids, finding that youngsters demonstrate a shockingly advanced comprehension of lying as a correspondence and relationship apparatus. “Children are very savvy in using deceit to preserve and maintain relationships. They learn that this behavior helps avoid conflict.” The greed to become physically attractive, power and famous allures the person to lie conveniently. Lies also come into play when one cannot handle the truth and rather live in a life of deception or denial. Having said all this there is type of lying called social or white lies, which is so common that they hardly considered lies because they are not intended to cheat but to respect the other person’s sensitivity. Socially and culturally we should be concerned about the fact that lies are becoming increasingly popular as an admirable survival skill. Long gone are the days when "honesty was the best policy". Now in this era of deception, dishonesty is the latest trend especially if ends up benefitting you.

Returning favours in turns of favours bestowed

Yet another very sophisticated facet of greed is expecting or demanding favors in return for the favors bestowed. Superficially it seems to be very logical, you help me and I will help you. However deep inside the motives are very selfish.
Firstly unreciprocated generosity even exists? Yes it does. But not for greedy people. For selfless individuals the world has a way of returning favors called "karma ". "Carry out a random act of kindness, with no expectation of reward, safe in the knowledge that one day someone might do the same for you.” Princess Diana. Everybody’s has heard of what goes around comes around . Doing good will ultimately bring good in your favor without any expectation. But if you are expecting a return from the very beginning than that trait is not virtue but a vice all dressed up to deceive. If one does a favor and expects something in return than it is nothttp://www.dobermandan.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/quidproquo.jpg humility but business. So one should be very clear in one’s mind if he's working towards generosity or is it just quid pro quo. There are shrewd people in the world who will only be in your good books when they know they can expect something in return ,you scratch my back ,I will scratch yours kind of phenomenon. There is no harm being a little street smart so you are not taken advantage of, but there is definitely a huge issue when you only extend your helping hands to those whom you know will ‘return the favors’. This last situation has been branded legal socially and it is called networking and not generosity. Generosity is when you know you’re helping someone who can probably not help you back or maybe he can but you are a strong enough individual not to expect anything in return and keep your heart clean. So it's one thing to be generous and another thing to develop a mutually beneficial relationship.
This was another simple example how greed affects us without us even being aware of it. How convenient for us to help someone whom we know can return the favor tomorrow, and how difficult for us to just be on the giving end. This affect is most commonly observed in the western culture especially affecting the new immigrants. In my experience I have actually observed a few angels who continue helping people without “getting paid for it”. And I have also witnessed sugar coated devils who will help you once and make you return the favor  atleast  five times ,or worse will only appear in scene when they know they will actually benefit from it . And as soon as they discover that there is nothing in it for them, they disappear like a poltergeist. One can actually categorize ones self just by thinking deep right into our motives before extending a helping hand. This world is in shortage of selfless people and by diagnosing this issue and mere restricting ourselves to taking advantage of the other individual ,we can help create more friendly environment.

The desire for power

The desire for power is another facet of greed in its extreme. Greed has a huge appetite for power thus making people ruthless in their efforts to achieve it. Power is an addictive vice. I realized that numerous lawmakers have a high sentiment of themselves, regularly searching race out of a requirement for force and acknowledgment that gets to be unquenchable once they're in office.
Business pioneers are not resistant to this desire for force. When one is around those conspicuous individuals, One feels effective, as well! Meher Baba dictated that "Greed is a state of restlessness of the heart, and it consists mainly of craving for power and possessions. Possessions and power are sought for the fulfillment of desires. Man is only partially satisfied in his attempt to have the fulfillment of his desires, and this partial satisfaction fans and increases the flame of craving instead of extinguishing it. Thus greed always finds an endless field of conquest and leaves the man endlessly dissatisfied. The chief expressions of greed are related to the emotional part of man".
https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/736x/d4/ff/36/d4ff36064b999f5ca7e01d9c88dafc09.jpgHow greed for power and wealth can result in the destruction of oneself as well as others is clearly illustrated in Shakespears world famous play, Macbeth. Most of us have atleast read Macbeth once in our school days.  The play's central character, Macbeth is not happy as a high-ranking thane - leading him to assassinate Duncan to become King, while unknowingly dooming himself.  Throughout the play many examples are evident of Macbeth's unquenchable thirst for power.  It is a worth reading play. Macbeth basically attempting to cover the grimy strides deserted his journey for force he had demolished two families and murdered pure and defenseless individuals. Macbeth, before his energy would have kicked the bucket battling against this very thing. At last, when it was the ideal opportunity for Macbeth to lose the throne and his energy, he couldn't acknowledge the truth. Macbeth had gotten to used to the power, he was murdered attempting to keep it. What acquired Macbeth up the world additionally had sent him tumbling down.
Shakespeare utilizes the character Macbeth to show the unavoidable aftereffect of greed. The play unmistakably outlines the avarice driven transformation of Macbeth. He starts as a kind man who executes just in fight in the most gallant circumstances, and finishes as a dreadful man who assaults the unprotected and pays proficient killers to murder for him. Macbeth distinctively delineates an existence absurdly lived, as Macbeth fates himself while seeking after an empty objective. Just like the protagonist in Shakespears story, we have many power hungry politicians, lawmakes and corporate who do not realize that the ladder that they are using to climb the building of power is as rotten as a criminals. Since a lot of people are participating in the race so definitely one criminal is more crooked than the other in order to win. The remaining people either join the race or are the victims of the results of these monsters.

Corruption

https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/236x/de/ce/fa/decefaf40e71f916b270ecde55160508.jpgAnother very readily acceptable aspect of greed is in the form of corruption. This venomous snake is worldwide long with extremely divergently branching tongues that's drops venoms in almost all sections, departments and compartments of life, society and politics. Who doesn't know what corruption is? Corruption is when a high profile beaurocrate accepts money for a chore that’s not legitimate letting the unworthy into the system and dragging the worthy out of it. This not leads to frustration in the common hard working man but instead misleads the systems of a community or a country that form the very basic foundations of social setup.
Corruption is when the traders of a society sell their below quality products as high end things out of greed for more and more profit without caring about the marring their reputation. This sets up new standards for accumulating riches caring less for quality or standards.
Corruption is also when societies who claim to help the poor and needy fraudulently digest all money or any other collectables themselves without any guilt of the thousands and thousands of hungry mouths that are waiting and remain waiting. What a pity. The donors think their donations are in the right hands whereas the recipients are kept waiting for food and clothing as promised. Both the groups kept in the dark by the corrupt participants. Yes greed is the only sin that drags a person to a level to forcefully snatch another man’s right of mere survival. What an evil sin?
Corruption and politics have become inseparable. Most of the political figures (usually in the less developed countries) are either corrupt themselves or turn a blind eye to corruption making holes in the political system. Even the judicial system in many regions of the world is highly influenced by corruption. The end result is obvious, a country with weak political and judicial systems is like incapacitated prey in front of the hunter.
https://davidoffutt.files.wordpress.com/2009/04/money_mind.jpg?w=500Corruption is not only involves money but also involves the aspects of our everyday life. Let me mention her corruption of our hearts. Maligning people and creating rifts between them by our everyday harmful habit of gossiping has dug deep in our hearts. Before we know it we actually insulted, degraded and deprived someone of his self respect regardless of the fact that he be devoid of all these vices in the first place. We pretend to be ignorant of the consequences this can generate. How cruel are human beings?
Corruption not only affects the heart but also the souls. Had it not been the case then how can people on one side of the planet can have the fanciest food to eat and not only the their plates are full but even the trash can are full of leftovers, where else not far from is a group of  physically and mentally similar or maybe even better human beings who do not even have a drop of clean water to drink. How cruel are we?
We have lost so much to greed. So much that we did not realize when the evolution of man to monster happened. Just one deadly virus of greed has culminated into a spectrum of envy, backbiting, cruelty and inhumanity.

Dowry - a social face of greed

Now let take a look how greed seeps in our culture without us even realizing it until the whole system gets used to it as a norm whereas deep down it is actually busy cutting the roots of the civilization. A very common form of this situation is how dowry is taken as a norm in especially the South Asian culture. I especially mention the South Asian culture because the problem is at its extreme in this civilization. We will take a quick peek at how this termite is eating up our wooden house.
"Earth provides enough to satisfy every mans need but not every mans greed" Mahatma Gandhi.
http://blogs.thenews.com.pk/blogs/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/dowry-415x260.gifOne of the most noticeably awful disasters of this society is the custom of dowry. "Dowry" implies the property and cash that a lady conveys to her other half's home at the time of her marriage.  Toward the starting it was deliberate, however later on the social pressure was such that not many could escape from it.
Dowry can range from cash, utensils, property or furniture thus bringing joy to the greedy however what an evil curse on the girls’ family for bearing this enormous burden of illegitimate demands going through both mental and financial tortures at the same time, and in most cases the bride’s parents cannot even afford it. According to me this harassment and in no religion, country or culture harassment is considered legal.
Maybe a decade or two ago the grooms parents would atleast verbally request the bride’s family not to go through the hassle but nowadays with the global inflation on the rise, people have actually started looking forward to it  as mean some extra help for them . Not only the groom benefits from it but the whole family lurks for it. And guess what plants the seed of the need to seek dowry? What is evil that nurtures this sin? What else but Greed.
Only  the greed for accumulation and hoarding can cultivate in a human the need to stoop so low to  ask for material things from his brides family instead of being grateful for to the family for blessing him with their most prized possession, their daughter ,a piece of their heart and soul.
There was a time in the past when the qualities looked in a life partner were education, morals, virtues and maybe beauty but now in this new era of modern technology wherein mankind has reached a different dimension of success but the mental capacity to be lured by money has become worse and  by the standards of greed who cares if the bride is uneducated ,has no moral values or even ugly as long as she brings with her cash , jewelry , furniture and even property to stabilize the groom and his family and if they stable enough it will atleast satisfy their hunger and greed.
What happens when the bride does not bring enough dowry with her? The answer is read in many news papers and the cry is heard all over the world. Women are beaten, burnt and killed. Greed has made humanity fall down on its knees and loose its grace by asking for dowry.
"He who is not contented with what he has, would not be contented with what he would like to have" Socrates.

The mother of all sins

http://www.cabot.net/buttons/Greed.gifReproduction as a process for evolution and progress has become such an integral part of our social systems that even traits like lust and envy are being multiplied. Although the physical source stays the same, that is humans, but the mother of these baby sins is the same characteristic of humans that has infested the socio-economic system, greed. The root cause of almost all the sins end up leading to greed being the culprit.

Not only this extreme desire of want can shake the economic bridge of the fellow humans in the community, but also can end up in many kinds of mutations. I would like to call them unhealthy resistant mutations the cure to which is becoming more and more difficult to develop. In my previous blogs I have talked a lot about how greed can lead to illegitimate desires of  wanting more and more monetary benefits leading to a successful human but ultimately shaking the foundations of the rest of the social group to which he/ she belongs. Now let's talk about the offsprings greed can generate. For example, envy can be called the most common mutation of greed leading to desire more, compete more and of course accumulate more. It is so common that it affects almost 100 percent of the population to a level that it can actually drain a person of his peace. "There is no calamity greater than lavish desires. There is no greater guilt than discontentment, and there is no greater disaster than greed", Lao Tzu. Envy can be branded as a psychological state discontentment.

Another version of greed is accumulation. The same desire for accumulation can reduce the fear of loss but an unguarded desire to accumulate more and more can ultimately lead to the parent sin of greed at its worse manifesting as undue stacking of monetary and other possessions which will ultimately to a limited extend gratify one and knowingly or unknowingly shaking the balance of economic distribution in the society. Throughout history we have seen people die to become rich and finally if it does happen to someone it is not always the best thing that happened to them. "There are only two tragedies in life; one is not getting what one wants, and the other is getting it “Oscar Wilde.

Another heinous form of greed is sexual lust. Originally incorporated in human beings as a means of human reproduction and also to some extent an expression of love, it has mutated to a criminal level of rapes, adultery and unfaithfulness cultivating in deactivating family systems. The number of rapes per year in many countries has risen to an alarming level. Another offspring of greed is fraud. Fraud is the daughter of greed. - Jonathan Gash, The Great California Game. Most of the fraudulent acts in any part of the world usually involve money.

However there is a kind of greed that is not harmful instead is very fruitful if utilized the right way. It is the greed for truth and knowledge. This rare kind of greed is the only kind not sought by humans since there is always a natural attraction towards the evil.

Greed as a vital sign of a successful life

http://images.christianpost.com/full/52292/culture-of-greed.jpgOur competitive lives in a society makes us connect greed to self- interest and thus thrive on it more and more in the fear of loss or falling behind in a community. Of central importance are the distinctions between greed and desire and between acquisition and satisfaction. Emphasis is placed on the connection between greed and loss, with greed understood as a response to the threat. Greed, desire and self interest leading to acquisitiveness rendering monetary success.
The idea  that  greed , desire and self interest run in a self sustaining cycle is the basis of success in social institutions. You see, the desire for self interest leads to the fear of loss and the continuing greed to be successful and ultimately the process runs in cycle. Though prominent in shaping our thinking about self-interest, the part played by greed is as often denied as acknowledged. The foreswearing of avarice communicates the inner conflict it incites, which comes from the risk it postures or appears to posture.
There is an inevitable link between greed and destructiveness.  The destructive aspect of greed is treated as a threat that must be made acceptable to continue growing. Joan Riviere notes that greed "represents an aspect of the desire to live. …  By its very nature it is endless and never assuaged; and being a form of the impulse to live, it ceases only with death" (1964, pp. 26-7; see also Hyatt-Williams 1998, p. 46) .  However destructive greed may be, its connection to our sense of aliveness and vitality lets it grow deeper and deeper in the society.
There is a difference between need and desire. The need limits to sustained economic of life whereas the desire for an object means something more than the need to have it to sustain life and in this sense desire has no limits.
Greed has two aspects of particular importance, exclusiveness and withholding from others (Greenberg and Mitchell 1983, pp. 128-9), This second aspect of greed is well expressed by Harold Boris when he distinguishes between greed and appetite according to whether satisfaction is a possibility or not.  Unlike appetite, "further gratification only stimulates … greed" (Boris 1994, p. 38).
However well known the thought of covetousness might be, it should likewise be a riddle accurately due to its refusal to be fulfilled. It is a yearning, but then it is definitely not. This is on account of covetousness' end is not to pick up fulfillment but rather to dodge dissatisfaction. We keep away from dissatisfaction not by picking up fulfillment, but rather by surrendering craving and supplanting it with something else. What shows up as the quest for self-interest may be the looking for after fulfillment of craving, or it may be the push to maintain a strategic distance from yearning and supplant it with something regarded of less threat to the self.
So self-interest connected to greed becomes both self-denial and an attack on others associating a greedy person as an example of the survival of the fittest in the society. Greed may appear in the form of acquisitiveness rendering the impulse to acquire ultimately leading to limitlessness. Not to forget here that one mans gains is another mans loss.
Thus, the "longing or greed for good things can relate to any and every imaginable kind of good--material possessions, bodily or mental gifts, advantages and privileges…" (Riviere 1964, p. 27).
